The Artwork

Blossoming Cherry on a Moonlit Night was designed by Ohara Shōson around 1932. The color woodblock print sets a flowering cherry tree against a cool blue night, with a full moon opening a pale circle behind the branches.

The composition is spare but dense at the same time. The trunk and branches occupy one side of the image while the moon creates a large area of stillness beside them. The blossoms sit between those two forces, picked out in pale tones against the darker sky.

The Artist

Ohara Shōson (1877–1945), born Ohara Matao, worked under several artist names during his career. Earlier prints are often signed Koson; from the mid-1920s, when he resumed print design with publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, he commonly used the name Shōson.

His reputation rests largely on kachō-e — images of birds and flowers — where careful observation meets an unusually controlled sense of atmosphere. Even when very little happens, the prints feel specific to a season, a time of day and a particular kind of weather.

The Story

Cherry blossoms and the moon have long carried seasonal weight in Japanese visual culture. Spring blossom viewing and moon viewing became shared ways of experiencing changes in the natural world, and both subjects appear repeatedly across poetry, painting, prints and decorative arts.

That sensitivity to changing seasons is closely related to mono no aware: an awareness of beauty made more affecting by the fact that it does not last. Shōson’s print does not illustrate the idea literally; it gives the viewer a quiet image in which blossom, night and moonlight all feel temporary.

Nothing in the image needs to move for it to feel fleeting.
