The Piece
Crafted in heavyweight bone-white cotton, this tee carries a sumi-style PHAVOS™ logo on the front and the full original print reproduced across the back — the kind of piece most people will read as "just art," and a few will recognize instantly for what it really is.

The Artwork
The back print reproduces Moon of Pure Snow at Asano River (1885), plate No. 9 from Tsukioka Yoshitoshi's Tsuki Hyakushi — "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon." It depicts Chikako, a young woman who threw herself into the Asano River on a snowy night, hands clasped in prayer, in a desperate act to win her wrongfully imprisoned father's release. Two startled cranes take flight beside her as a full moon rises — widely considered one of the finest and most emotionally charged designs in the entire series.

The Artist
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) is regarded as the last great master of ukiyo-e. Working during Japan's rapid Westernization under the Meiji era, he brought a new emotional depth and narrative power to the woodblock print, distilling entire stories — myth, history, tragedy — into a single moonlit image. One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, completed in the final years of his life, is considered his defining masterpiece.
