The Piece

The Artwork
The back print reworks Chinese Golden Oriole on Plum Blossom Branch, a woodblock print by Japanese artist Ohara Koson (1877–1945), showing a vivid yellow bird perched mid-movement on a branch, its head turned downward. The piece belongs to Koson's celebrated kachō-e ("bird-and-flower") prints, prized for their precise, painterly observation of nature.

The Artist
Born Ohara Matao in Kanazawa, Koson trained in painting before moving to Tokyo, where he became one of the defining names of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement. Working across three artist names over his career — Koson, Shōson, and Hōson — he produced roughly 500 prints and is regarded as the leading 20th-century master of kachō-e, with his bird studies collected internationally, particularly in the United States.
