The Piece
Heavyweight cream hoodie with an oversized fit. The back carries Shōson’s moonlit cherry blossom print, while tonal PHAVOS™ marks on the chest and sleeve keep the rest of the garment restrained.

The Artwork
The back print reproduces Blossoming Cherry on a Moonlit Night (ca. 1932) by Ohara Shōson. The color woodblock print places a flowering cherry tree against a cool blue night, with a full moon opening a pale circle behind the branches.

The Story
Cherry blossoms and the moon have long been recurring seasonal subjects in Japanese art. Blossom viewing and moon viewing became shared ways of experiencing the changing seasons, closely connected to the sensitivity known as mono no aware: an awareness of beauty made more affecting by its transience.

The Artist
Ohara Shōson (1877–1945), born Ohara Matao, worked under several artist names during his career. Earlier prints are often signed Koson; from the mid-1920s, during his renewed collaboration with publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, he commonly used the name Shōson. He became especially known for kachō-e — images of birds and flowers.

The PHAVOS™ Interpretation
Night Blossom keeps the original image almost untouched. The intervention is mainly contextual: Shōson’s print moves onto the back of the hoodie while tonal PHAVOS™ details on the chest and sleeve remain quiet enough to let the artwork lead.
