The Artwork
The back print reproduces Blossoming Cherry on a Moonlit Night (ca. 1932) by Japanese artist Ohara Koson, a single branch heavy with white blossoms stretched across a deep indigo sky beneath a luminous full moon. Rooted in the Japanese concept of mono no aware — an awareness of impermanence and the beauty found in fleeting things — the piece captures the two great rituals of the Japanese calendar, cherry blossom viewing and moon gazing, in one quiet, nocturnal frame.

The Artist
Born Ohara Matao in Kanazawa, Koson became one of the defining figures of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, which revived traditional woodblock techniques with a renewed focus on natural and atmospheric subjects. Working across three artist names over his career, he produced roughly 500 prints, with his bird, flower, and nocturnal studies collected internationally and still regarded among the finest of 20th-century Japanese printmaking.
