The woodblock print shows the Buddhist monk Nichiren as a small red figure making his way through deep snow during his exile on Sado Island.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Story\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNichiren (1222–1282), founder of the Buddhist tradition that bears his name, was exiled to Sado Island in 1271 after prolonged conflict with political authorities and rival Buddhist institutions. He remained there until 1274. Kuniyoshi turns that episode into an image of physical endurance: the mountain, village and path are nearly swallowed by snow while Nichiren continues forward.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Artist\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUtagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861) was one of the defining ukiyo-e artists of nineteenth-century Japan. Famous for warriors, legends and supernatural subjects, he was equally capable of landscapes where scale and weather carry most of the emotional weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe PHAVOS™ Interpretation\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe name \u003cem\u003eFrostbound\u003c\/em\u003e comes from the way the figure appears held inside the weather. The Jade Rabbit belongs to the moon and is associated with pounding an elixir there. In the story, the rabbit leaves the lunar realm, assumes the identity of a princess and attempts to marry the travelling monk Xuanzang. Sun Wukong sees through the disguise and confronts the rabbit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Artist\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) worked through the transition from late Edo Japan into the Meiji era. His prints drew on history, theatre, literature, folklore and supernatural stories, and \u003cem\u003eOne Hundred Aspects of the Moon\u003c\/em\u003e became one of the major series of his final years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe PHAVOS™ Interpretation\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe intervention enters through the moon. Yoshitoshi makes the lunar disc the dominant field of the composition; PHAVOS™ places its mark inside that existing focal point instead of adding a second competing graphic.
